Queen Victoria Market Chief Executive Officer Matt Elliott has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Melbourne Market Authority (MMA), the statutory body that operates one of Australia’s largest wholesale fruit, vegetable and flower markets. The role includes advising the Victorian Government on the fresh produce sector.
Matt will see out the term of his four-year contract. He will remain with the Market until 24 December 2026, through the busy pre-Christmas period, and will lead an orderly handover.
The Queen Victoria Market Board offered Matt a further term as CEO, which he considered very seriously before ultimately deciding to accept the MMA opportunity. The Board is working through future leadership arrangements.
Chair Jane Fenton AM said:
“Matt has been a true leader through complex and challenging times at Queen Victoria Market. On behalf of the Board, I thank him for his leadership, his significant contribution to the Market and his commitment to our traders and customers. He will be sorely missed, and we wish him every success in this important next step in his career.”
Matt said:
“To say I have mixed feelings about this decision would be an understatement. It has been an enormous privilege to lead Queen Victoria Market and to work alongside the people who care so deeply about its future.
“Working with the traders of Queen Victoria Market has been very rewarding. We are all temporary custodians of an extraordinary Melbourne institution, each entrusted with its care for a brief moment in its long history. My new role keeps me connected to fresh food, small business and Victoria’s market community, and I will be here for the busy pre-Christmas period to lead the handover.”
