Karen Martini, Queen Vic Market Ambassador

Queen Victoria Market welcomes Karen Martini as the Market’s new ambassador. The Melbourne-based chef, restaurateur, writer, television presenter and mum is looking forward to sharing her love of food, passion for the Market and expertise with customers and traders.

Throughout the year, Karen will share seasonal produce updates, recipes, videos, shopping tips and tricks as well as present cooking demonstrations; encouraging Melburnians to embrace the fresh produce, diverse culture and community spirit that thrives at Melbourne’s favourite marketplace.

Seasonal Produce Updates

“If there is something that is in season, shoppers are going to see it first here at the Queen Victoria Market,” Karen says. Across winter, be on the lookout for:

  • Rhubarb – a ruby jewel that is ready for slow poaching.
  • Citrus – all local oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes.
  • Mandarin – due for a shorter season, so get in early and make marmalade.
  • Beetroot – sweet, earthy and deliciously tender.
  • Fennel – my absolute favourite! Cut into wedges and roast in olive oil.
  • Brussels sprouts – the smaller the better and oh so good for you!
  • Celeriac – creamy and rich when added to mash.
