Sourced from the sacred bunya tree, these native Australian nuts weigh approximately 15 grams each and offer 130 kilojoules (32 calories) per nut. With a dry, crunchy texture and a flavour akin to chestnuts with aromatic pine notes, they have long been a treasured food for Indigenous Australians. The shell is hard to open, but can be cracked with a hammer and roasted, or boiled until it softens — after which the nut can be easily spooned out.
