On 3 September 2024, City of Melbourne Councillors endorsed the proposal to introduce a smoke-free area at Queen Victoria Market as part of its ongoing Smoke-Free Melbourne policy.
Community consultation with Market traders and customers found 76% support of the introduction of the smoke-free area, with a further 41% of customers saying they would be more likely to visit the Market with the introduction of a smoke-free area.
The new smoke-free area is now in effect. Signage has been installed near entry points and in other areas of the Market to advise that smoking and vaping is not permitted.
