Self-Guided Heritage Trail
In its 140 years, Queen Victoria Market has had a colourful and sometimes controversial history. During that time, the site has been a cemetery, a livestock market and a wholesale fruit and vegetable market. Each of these operations has its own history and an element of controversy. Students can explore the historic landmarks and architectural features at their own pace when they take our Self-guided Heritage Trail.
Download the Self-guided Heritage Trail map or pop into our Visitor Hub and pick one up.
Testimonials
“I took my students and another class (Year 1 and 2) on an educational tour of the Vic Market. It was a truly tailored experience that the students thoroughly enjoyed…I can’t wait to go back again, I forgot how many wonderful things there were. Very impressed.”
“What a wonderful experience our students had today at the Vic Market with the amazing tour guides and stall holders. This was such a big experience for some of our students as many of them had not been into the city before, or tried a lot of the cuisine that they got to taste today. Our students were fully engaged for the extent of the tour which is a testament to the guides and cannot recommend it enough.”
“Thank you for having us! All of us teachers, and of course students were raving about how much we loved the tour. In particular it was great getting to know and meeting the traders, and being able to show the students the unique history and the multicultural influences that have shaped Melbourne’s food culture. Could you please pass our thanks onto the wonderful tour guides for hosting us today, they were fantastic!”
